CVS is ordering a new generic version of the blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, the first of its kind.
The drug is the second of a string of medications in recent years to be approved for use by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of the disorder, the agency said Thursday.
The new Viagra will be sold at CVS, Rite Aid and other pharmacies nationwide, the agency said.
"This is a significant milestone for us as a healthcare provider and a patient in a very small number of cases," said Dr. Jeffrey Dr. Frank, chief medical officer for CVS Health.
CVS has already launched the generic version of Viagra, which the agency said is expected to cost $90 for a month's supply, which is about half the cost of the brand-name drug and will go down to the pharmacy, Rite Aid said. Rite Aid also sells its generic version.
The FDA approved CVS's version of Viagra last year, but said Thursday the generic version is a different drug, with a different name and strength.
Viagra and its generic counterparts are the same drug and have similar effects, the FDA said. CVS sells the drug for about $1 per pill. CVS spokesman Daniel Watts said the company's patent for the new drug is still in the process of being reviewed, though a generic version is expected to be available by mid-May.
"While it may be marketed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, we strongly advise patients to consult with their health care provider before starting any new medication, and to follow their doctor's instructions regarding dosage and administration," Watts said in a statement. "We also advise patients not to self-medicate to avoid possible drug interactions with other medications."
CVS officials also warned of the increased competition for generic Viagra, which will be available at a discount to CVS for about $4 a pill. Rite Aid's price for the generic drug, which can cost as little as $10 for a month's supply, is about $3 a pill.
CVS Health said the price of Viagra is lower than the price of its brand-name drug, which the FDA previously approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction.
